The Art of Exploration with Neil Rizos
The Bird Journaling Workshop focuses on observing and drawing birds accurately. It addresses the special challenges of drawing birds and provides practical solutions to achieving results in the studio and in the field. There will be how-to demonstrations, individual instruction and abundant drawing time. This may be presented as a full day workshop or multi-day workshop, (up to three days).

Goal of the Workshop for Participants
The goal of the Bird Journaling Workshop is to provide participants a proven method to observe and record the essential information necessary to create accurate field studies. By learning to approach nature in this way, participants will have the opportunity to enrich their experience of the natural world with trained observation and drawing skills. The purpose of approaching nature with journaling is to enjoy a deeper encounter through careful observation of the subject and one’s response to it.
Workshop Format
The goals of the Bird Journaling Workshop are achieved primarily in the classroom. Multi-day workshops may include field work, when possible.
Half-Day - 4 hours
Full Day - 6 hours
Two Day or Three Day Workshop
This workshop is designed for Adults
Skill Level – Beginner to Advanced
Classroom Component
Drawing birds from life can be a rewarding experience if undertaken with a knowledge of the tools, materials and the subject beforehand.
The Classroom component of the workshop includes a review of the following: Equipment; Materials; Drawing; Species; Expectations; Demonstration; Photography; Resources. It focuses on understanding how to draw accurately from 2D and 3D reference material.
Field Component
The Field component of the workshop includes the following:
Applying what has been learned; Demonstration; Photography for reference; Critique; Q&A - Conclusion.
Expected Achievements
Bird Journaling Workshop participants can expect to gain the fundamental knowledge required to approach the field sketching of birds and other animals and plants with confidence. Practicing this approach consistently will improve drawing skills and create a more satisfying journal sketching experience. Participants are encouraged to continue learning about and practicing field sketching and will be provided a list recommended online and print resources.
